Goalies Are Always In Demand

March 15, 2012 Leave a comment

I decided to play on two teams for the second season in a row this year and so far it has turned out nicely. One team is in the “B” level and the other in “C”. So I get a nice mix of the talent I face each night and each level allows me to work on different aspects of my game. Yesterday I was relaxing with my family before my back to back games when my phone rang. It was the rink asking if I can come in early to sub-in for the first game of the night. Read more…

Contacts or Glasses?

Not every sports player has perfect vision and most sports require your vision to be sharp. Blurry vision can have a significant impact on a goaltender’s performance and health. Not being able to track the puck properly or misjudging the trajectory of the puck might just end up leading to an unwanted goal. However, what if you thought the puck looked like it was coming in low and it ends up hitting you in the head giving you a concussion? Same thing goes for the players around you in the crease. If you cannot tell who is who or see what is going on around you, you might not see someone who is about to crash into you. Read more…

Success, How Bad Do You Want it?

December 5, 2011 Leave a comment

I mentioned in my first post for this blog how influential my Uncle Don has been throughout my life. Another gem of wisdom that he frequently tries to impart is, “How bad do you want it?” I would tell him about a goal I had and he would ask me that question. He would help me figure out what it would truly take to succeed and understand what I was committing to. Recently he sent an email around talking about a video my cousin sent him. Read more…

Advanced to the Next Round

This past Wednesday night was the first round of the single elimination playoffs for the Silver division team I am on. Due to it being the day before Thanksgiving there were a large number of no-shows and we almost did not have a game. At first it was going to be 3-on-3, but at the last minute two more players showed up and we were able to have a regular 4-on-4 game. The only downside was that there were no subs, so towards the end of the first period everyone was exhausted.

The rink I play at changes the game periods for the playoffs from three 15 minute periods down to two 20 minute periods. Not really sure why they do this but when your team is short on players it causes them to fatigue much faster. Even though everyone was exhausted my team still managed to score plenty of goals for us to win. The final score was 13 to 5 and forced to end three minutes early because of the 8 goal mercy rule. I saw an average number of shots for this league and only two of the five goals were completely on me. The first goal I squared up with the center of the shooter and not the puck and got beat low blocker side. The other goal I did not come out enough to cut off the angle and got beat high glove side.

Next week are the 2nd and final rounds of the playoffs as well as the start of the new season for my Bronze division team. In the event my Silver division team wins the 2nd round, we have no break and we play for the championship. Once the championship game is finished I go right into the first game of the season for the Bronze division. So it looks like next Wednesday night is going to be mighty busy with a potential of back to back to back games. I do not mind playing three games in a row if it means that I go home that night a champion.

MovemberIt is currently eleven days into this year’s Movember campaign. Don’t know what Movember is? You can learn all about it here. The goal of Movember is to raise awareness and donations for the types of cancer that affect men. Besides fundraising, each male participant (aka Mo-Bro) has to be clean shaven on November 1st and grow the best moustache he can till the end of November. Don’t worry, women can participate too in Movember (aka Mo-Sista). As of this post I have raised $185 and my moustache is starting to come in nicely. Read more…

Back From a Two Week Break

Well I was hoping that I wouldn’t make a post like this for a while, but now is as good a time as any. The schedule for the current season has a three week gap in it with our next game not happening till next Friday. Late this afternoon I got a phone call from a rink I sub-in for sometimes asking if I could make it for the 8pm game. Wanting to shake the rust off I agreed to rush down there and play.

I didn’t get a chance to stretch or warm-up too much but I stopped just about all of the shots I faced in the pre-game practice. That is where the fun stopped. The game started off like any other game until my defense botched the setup play behind the net and two guys swarmed the crease and scored. The rest of the first period played out the same way. The setups that were made kept being botched and I was left out to dry. Read more…

Humble Beginnings

July 7, 2011 Leave a comment

One of the most influential person and mentor in my life, my Uncle Don, took me out one night when I was around 12 or 13 years old to go see a hockey game. We arrived at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum located in Uniondale, NY and watched the New York Islanders win the game. For some people it might have been just another sporting event, but for me it was life changing. Read more…
